1 km already!

20 Jul

Ever since  I started pushing a manual chair indoors, I dreamt of one day being able to travel 1 kilometer without stopping. it seemed like a far off goal, unlikely to be reached in the near future. But last night that future became reality.

the evening did not start out well. after pushing only 10 meters or so, I began to feel light headed. A fellow resident said I looked unwell and tired. I decided to just continue slowly and see if I could complete at least one lap, or 80 meters. but after one lap, I felt I might be able to complete two, and then after that I begin to feel stronger and stronger. I completed 7 laps in an hour, about 560 meters, and then 10 laps, a new record, in just over an hour and a half. now there was no stopping me. I continued on to complete the full 1000 meters in 1 hour 47 minutes. needless to say, I slept well last night.

Hurrah, Hurrah, Stewart! That’s a real achievement, one that you can really be proud of! The only downside I can see—at least for me—is that I wouldn’t want to race, or even just keep up, with you in one of my two manually operated wheel-chairs. I’m afraid my Vascular Parkinson’s is a downward slope but that’s the way life goes, I guess. A prayer by the famously renowned St. Francis of Assisi several hundred years ago, that was brought to my attention recently, says it all. It goes something like, “God, give me the strength to accept what cannot be changed, the determination to change what can and the wisdom to know the difference”! One doesn’t have to be a believer to see the sense in that. You’re pushing the determination to near the limit and are to be admired for this and your compliance with the whole matter..
