Now here’s a guy with a challenge

23 Jul

I just read an article about an Irishman named Mark Pollock. Challenges as a quadriplegic are small to what he is facing, being both blind and a paraplegic. I am fascinated by the progress he is making. Check it out. Also, take a look at his blog. He is a motivational speaker and writes quite eloquently.

1 km already!

Ever since  I started pushing a manual chair indoors, I dreamt of one day being able to travel 1 kilometer without stopping. it seemed like a far off goal, unlikely to be reached in the near future. But last night that future became reality.

the evening did not start out well. after pushing only 10 meters or so, I began to feel light headed. A fellow resident said I looked unwell and tired. I decided to just continue slowly and see if I could complete at least one lap, or 80 meters. but after one lap, I felt I might be able to complete two, and then after that I begin to feel stronger and stronger. I completed 7 laps in an hour, about 560 meters, and then 10 laps, a new record, in just over an hour and a half. now there was no stopping me. I continued on to complete the full 1000 meters in 1 hour 47 minutes. needless to say, I slept well last night.

when pushing my manual chair up and down the hallways of my residents in the evening, my previous record of six laps in an hour.working hard at it, 2 nights ago I managed to complete 8 laps in an hour.that is 640 meters total distance, so my average speed is still less than 1 kilometer per hour!
